Not just another day on Broadway (10/5/08)

It’s been awhile since I posted anything on this blog site. I was back down on Broadway St. yesterday, to take advantage of the soft shadows afforded by overcast skies . . . turns out there was, as always, a lot to see, and new developments to learn of.

One of my objectives yesterday was to find Teresa, a homeless woman with some serious drug problems. I had been contacted a few days earlier by a singer-songwriter who had seen some of my photographs of Teresa on the web, and wanted me to take some more for a music video or slide show he’s working on. He offered me $200 plus lunch” if we could find her and get her to cooperate. I told him, and told her yesterday, that I would take the lunch but prefer the $200 goes to Teresa. She seemed receptive to the idea, although as this new photograph seems to show, she was in a bad state of mind.

Later on I ran into Lydia (in the center), who once again was drunk to the point of near incoherence. She was with a different partner this time. She thanked me profusely for mailing some photographs of her to the shelter they stay at, but asked for a new set, because all of her stuff had been recently stolen.

On a sad note, the mystery as to why I (or anyone else) hadn’t seen Tom Sweeny, the man who pushed the rabbit in a stroller outside Clifton’s, for several weeks, was finally answered. A woman in a nearby newsstand told John the Balloon Man and I that he is hospitalized after suffering a heart attack. His wife, I learned, a homeless wheelchair-bound regular on the street, was forced to give his rabbit away. No one seems to know which hospital he’s in.

  1. I love this, thank you for sharing your art with me! I never would have imagined this of you some thirty years ago. Don’t know if I told you, but I’ve always considered you my other brother, not my cousin. hugs and kisses to you and yours. B
